The group behind this name was formed by 2RQue and C-HELL-O.S in 1993. They came to think of a "real" name for a project-turned-to-group, and being influenced by the music they listened to (Public enemy,RUN DMC,NWA,2 Live Crew...) they decided that their name should consist of numbers and letters forming one word. Searching through a dictionary, 2RQUE ran into the word "fortune", which in slang can be written as 4TUNE (in that form it has many meanings, such as: happiness, wealth, 4 melodies, 4 tuna fishes...) and came to agree to name themselves that way.
